I quit giving homework as a teacher, and there's this book I co-authored about ditching it. Just want to get that out of the way. But […]

I don’t agree that ditching is the answer, though. Instead of increasing the gap, hwk could be transformed to close the gap by developing School Learning Networks by strengthening the home/school connection through meaningful, family engaging activities. You have addresses the positive impact of ditching hwk. As a leader in education, I’m hoping you’ll go deeper and reconsider the potential negative impact of your approach.

I have taught for almost 40 years and about 3 years ago I realized that for the quality of work that was returning each day, homework was definitely not worth it! I have always had the mindset that I was going to teach my lessons so thoroughly that my students do not need homework to be successful. In my opinion, it is my job to give my students plenty of opportunities to learn the skills/content in meaningful ways so they are successful without extra practice at home. I never wanted to say, “Some of my students have poor grades because they don’t do there homework”. My students work hard from 7:30-2:40 each day and they are KIDS. I want them to go home, enjoy their family, chill out, and be ready to get at it the next day at 7:30. Because of little or no homework, I am happy, their parents are happy, and they are happy.

I think your statement, “What I hope we’ll do is examine our practices to see if they’re based on tradition or based on effectiveness,” best sums up the quandary where many educators find ourselves. The research, IMO, is inconclusive because studies seem to contradict one another on the effectiveness of the practice. That leaves teachers to make hard decisions. By the way, nearly 21 years in education, I, too, think I’m in the “Ditch the Homework” crowd. Thanks for your thought provoking post.
